Natural manila rope, sometimes called hemp rope, made from abaca fibre grown in the Philippines.
It is strong, low stretch and hard-wearing. Its natural oil helps it resist moisture, so it suits outdoor use, but the oil also has a smell, so it is less suited indoors. It is stiff and rough in the hand.
Traditionally a ship's rope, it is now popular as a natural barrier for gardens and ponds, and for decoration.
